The Great Plains Zoo features over 500 animals from around the world. Our 45-acre park features animals in simulated natural habitats, such as the Asian Cat Habitat, Bear Canyon and our new African Savannah. Our popular Children’s Zoo gives visitors an up close and personal chance to interact with the animals.

At this venue in the Washington Pavilion, you'll find an extensive range of works spread across six galleries. Both permanent and changing exhibits boast a variety of media, and visitors can browse items in the Children's Gallery or peruse a good collection of works by Native American artists. Other draws are works by regional artists and ones by renowned Americans. Also in the complex are a performing arts center, a science discovery center, and a large cinedome movie theater.

This nature site is one of the city's more popular natural sightseeing spots. The park includes picnic and hiking areas and provides an excellent spot to get away from the bustle of the city.  
Historic Downtown

A stroll through downtown Sioux Falls opens up a world of local sights and culture. Friendly shopkeepers, cozy restaurants, and sightseeing and shopping opportunities abound. The historic area offers much to see and do, and it's the location of regularly scheduled events throughout the year.

Return to the days when trolleys were an important form of local transportation. During rides through the city – which make a circuit from Falls Park to numerous downtown stops – guides share interesting tidbits and local lore. The heated trolleys offer a great way to tour the city casually in an hour or to spend the better part of the day observing local attractions. Call ahead for departure times and destinations.  
St. Joseph Cathedral

This beautiful, early-20th century cathedral is a good example of classic Romanesque architecture. It remains as a center for religious life in the community and also stands as one of the region's most impressive structures.

This fun, interesting historical adventure highlights the history and culture of the American West in various displays. The site offers fascinating exhibits for all members of the family and is an exciting, educational opportunity to learn about the region. The on-site restaurant serves delicious buffalo burgers.  
Pettigrew Home

This regional museum affords an historic look into Sioux Falls' past and that of the Midwest in general. Built in 1889, the lovely dwelling was home to the Pettigrew family, who were local business leaders and politicians. The house, a detailed Queen Anne structure, features American Indian memorabilia and artifacts relating to the career of US Senator Richard F. Pettigrew. It also boasts a wealth of beautiful architecture and furnishings.


 
USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial

The USS South Dakota, aka Battleship X, was the first American craft during World War II to fire on the Japanese homeland (July, 1945). Sailors who served on the ship return to Sioux Falls each year to remember their wartime experiences and honor fellow sailors who lost their lives. The site offers a memorial and ship tours.  
Yankton Trail and Park
S. Minnesota Ave at Big Sioux River, at W. 57th Street
Sioux Falls, SD

The Yankton Trail once led early settlers to the capital of the Dakota Territory (which, at the time, was Yankton). Along it, at this particular location, folks regularly crossed the Big Sioux River. The history of the area and of the people who inhabit the region are closely tied to the trail. Today, the park is popular for outdoor activities and sporting events, including soccer tournaments and baseball games.

This restored Romanesque building – a National Historic Landmark fashioned of quartzite and boasting a dramatic clock tower – features permanent and changing exhibits on regional history and culture. The museum also offers lectures and workshops and houses a genealogical society and library. Annual concerts are sponsored as well. Be sure to check out the beautifully detailed wall murals dating from the early 20th century that adorn the halls. Onsite gift shop.
