regional museum affords an historic look into Sioux Falls' past and that
of the Midwest in general. Built in 1889, the lovely dwelling was home to
the Pettigrew family, who were local business leaders and politicians. The
house, a detailed Queen Anne structure, features American Indian memorabilia
and artifacts relating to the career of US Senator Richard F. Pettigrew.
It also boasts a wealth of beautiful architecture and furnishings.

The USS South Dakota, aka Battleship X, was the first American craft during World War II to fire on the Japanese homeland (July, 1945). Sailors who served on the ship return to Sioux Falls each year to remember their wartime experiences and honor fellow sailors who lost their lives. The site offers a memorial and ship tours. | |

The Yankton Trail once led early settlers to the capital of the Dakota Territory (which, at the time, was Yankton). Along it, at this particular location, folks regularly crossed the Big Sioux River. The history of the area and of the people who inhabit the region are closely tied to the trail. Today, the park is popular for outdoor activities and sporting events, including soccer tournaments and baseball games. |

This restored Romanesque building – a National Historic Landmark fashioned of quartzite and boasting a dramatic clock tower – features permanent and changing exhibits on regional history and culture. The museum also offers lectures and workshops and houses a genealogical society and library. Annual concerts are sponsored as well. Be sure to check out the beautifully detailed wall murals dating from the early 20th century that adorn the halls. Onsite gift shop. |
